Paint ball at the retreat
Only a couple of weeks to go now! Very exciting.
I know there some people looking at coming for a day and wondering which day is best...
We are just in the process of booking in some activites aimed at the older children.
Paintball Sunday 24th Feb 1-3pm
This is nearby (a short drive) at Platoon Wargames Himitangi/
They are booking the whole place just for us, so it will be safer for younger children who want to play.
I know the biggest concern with this is that IT HURTS! The guys said if you wear long pants and a top under their padded overalls the paint balls feel like a ping pong ball, no bruises.
This is in an army setting, we have two hours of playing. There are 5 games you go through and the guys that run it sound as though they are involved in helping out.
Spectators are welcome and if you bring food you can sit in an army setting and watch the games.
***Cost is $40 per person.
This gives you 100 paint balls.
More can be purchased ($10 for 100 before p;ay starts or $15 during play)
****12year olds and over can play alone, 7-12 year olds need an adult playing alongside.
Please let me know if you are in!

Activities at the retreat
We have found being unchoolers, natural learners, life learners( and potential ones,) most people don't want too much organisation.
If however you would like to offer an activity we would be very pleased to have you!
Anyone want to be around for flag painting on the first day??
Run a morning yoga session?
Retreat kids choir? Flax weaving?
Any other activities?
*****Of course for the younger kids especially they make their own fun and play the most amazing games without any adult suggestions.
For the older children/ teenagers there has been much discussion around things they would enjoy and that would encourage them to attend the retreat.
We have so far come up with paint ball
Wind warriors
Movie night
Board games
If you or your teenager has any other suggestions, please let me know! :)

Evening meal plan
The plan for evening meals is to all provide the basics and then a small team of people put it together. This means you only have to prepare one meal (hopefully) and means meal times aren't crazy busy in the kitchen...
Thursday night - baked potatoes and toppings (bring scrubbed spuds and a topping/salad)
******* those doing the meal cook the spuds and heat up/chop up/ put out toppings
Friday night - Tortillas -
(bring wraps, beans or tomatoes to add to the refried beans then some cheese or sour cream or salad bits) ********those doing the meal add to the beans,(basic mix will be made) chop and grate things, heat up wraps and serve/lay out
Saturday night - Pot luck salads/breads & pudding
(bring salad/ breads/other easy finger type food and pudding)
*********those helping heat, slice, lay out etc....
Sunday night - Pasta night
(Bring your families favourite sauce, some cheese and some pasta to cook en masse - salad too :) )
*******those helping cook huge pots of pasta and heat, grate and lay out everything
Monday - leftovers and rice
(rice will be provided, so just put an extra little something just in case there are no leftovers!!)
**********helpers will need to cook rice and be expert fridge cleaner-outer-ers!!And creative....
We still need some vounteers to help organise these meals so please contact me if you can help - especially if you have a partner there, or older children. ( janehiggy@hotmail.com )
Remember there will be smoothies and dried fruit/nuts to buy.
*** We are very close to shops as well.

Less than 6 weeks until the Retreat!
Kia Ora and Happy New Year,
Less than 6 weeks to go until our retreat. Registrations are rolling in and I am sure it will be a wonderful time together!
Latest little updates-
Food
Smoothies will be available to buy, twice a day, freshly made.
Small bags of dried fruit, nuts and scroggin type mixes will be available to buy
Pancakes will be available for Sunday breakfast (a very popular treat last year!)
Breakfast and lunch will be self catering
Dinner will be shared - more details on the food blog and in later blogs!
(Please let me know if you are available to help co-ordinate any evening meals - 4 or 5 people in the kitchen is a more pleasant experience than 20 or 30!)
The Programme
As unschoolers, and potential unschoolers there was a natural flow to last years retreat than worked best being mostly unscheduled.
There will be some scheduled activities for the little kids, the big kids, the adults and for everyone.
Most popular and top of the list -
****Market place - kids, adults, homemade....get creative and remember to bring lots of small change to spend. Last year we had hand made shields, tools, candles, jewellery, felting, massage, cups of tea, snacks.....
****Women's and men's circles (separate) - this was a time to share, ask questions, listen and just hang out.
Everyone found these sessions very valuable - maybe we can squeeze in more than one each...?
**** Concert
****Fancy dress dinner/party
Ideas for this year are still underway I will be blogging as things are finalised.
If there is something you would like to run or be involved in please let me know.
Watch this space and please remember to pass this on and sign up for updates if you haven't already.
Thanks
Jane
